Tithing, biblically is in the Old and New Testament all the way back to Abraham. (Genesis 14:18-20).  It's a tenth, the first and best 10% that we create, harvest or earn. In modern times this is normally part of earned income.  But, another thing that comes out of this, is that it's a way to worship God.  God tells us to trust Him and He will bless us in all we do.

Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?
